Description
In 1773, the first comprehensive General Turnpike Act was passed, gathering together the enormous mass of local acts and forming the basis of future turnpike trust administration. Both it and the 15 statutes that followed it were all consolidated in the present act, itself followed almost immediately by three further amending acts.

The text of these acts are published here with able commentaries by the lawyer, Joseph Bateman. He also includes a long introduction to the first volume, giving a history of the parliamentary commissions from 1811 onwards, while in the second volume he indicates the shift towards the proper construction and repair of roads as a primary consideration.
