Paris, Clouzier, 1685
Savot's treatise is concerned more with the practical aspects of building than with design. He considers siting and positioning with detailed discussion on the layout and arrangement of internal spaces, before going on to the construction of external and internal walls, vaulting for basements, floors and roof structures, and covering water supply, chimney construction and prevention of smoking etc. He also deals with the estimatation of quantities of materials and, unusually, includes a bibliography of architectural books. His book first appeared in 1624. This second edition was re-issued after his death with extensive notes by François Blondel, whose comments, both on architectural topics and on the bibliography, are of considerable interest.
